Tenganan Village Guide
Tenganan: Step Back in Time in Bali's Ancient Village Guide
Discover the unique cultural heritage of Bali at Tenganan Village, one of the island's oldest and most traditional villages. This walled village, inhabited by the Bali Aga people, offers a fascinating glimpse into a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Explore the traditional architecture, witness the intricate weaving of 'geringsing' cloth, and experience the rich cultural traditions that make Tenganan a truly special destination. The Bali Aga people, believed to be the original inhabitants of Bali, have preserved their unique customs and traditions in Tenganan. Unlike the rest of Bali, which adopted Hindu-Majapahit influences, Tenganan maintains its own distinct social structure, religious beliefs, and artistic practices. The village is renowned for its 'geringsing' double ikat textiles, which are considered sacred and are believed to possess magical powers. The weaving process is incredibly complex and can take months or even years to complete. Visitors can wander through the village, observing the traditional houses and meeting the friendly locals. Witness the intricate process of 'geringsing' weaving and purchase these unique textiles directly from the artisans. Depending on the time of year, you may also have the opportunity to witness traditional ceremonies and festivals, such as the 'Mekare-Kare' or 'Pandanus War,' a ritual combat between young men using thorny pandanus leaves. Local warungs (small restaurants) offer traditional Balinese dishes, providing a taste of the local cuisine.
